In the ageless wisdom, and then especially in the Agni Yoga teachings of Helena Roerich,1 is often made mention of the Mother of the World. The coming age is there presented as "the age of the Mother of the World".2 In 'Ageless Wisdom, The New Age' the age of the Mother of the World was not mentioned.3 Here this age shall be explained in relation to one of the to be expected developments in the new age.
We shall start with a few words about the Mother of the World. The Mother of the World basically is a mother in the esoteric philosophical sense of the word. This means that the Mother of the World represents the matter aspect of a certain entity or given.4, 5 And since She is the Mother of the World She is the material counterpart of the spiritual Father (or Lord) of the World.6 Now that the Mother of the World is what Her name indicates means that She is not the Mother of the Universe, Who represents the matter aspect on a larger scale. The Mother of the World is basically Mother Earth.7 She is symbolized by religious figures like Isis, Ishtar and Mary.8 When the Mother of the World truly manifests Herself as an individual on the planet She is called 'the World Mother'. However this has not happened (fully) on our planet Earth, where the World Mother is only symbolized as mentioned before.9
So why then is the coming age named 'the age of the Mother of the World'? In 'Ageless Wisdom, The New Age' were four important changes in the new age mentioned, namely the constellation change from Pisces to Aquarius, the ray change from ray six to ray seven, the destruction of the planetary etheric web and the externalisation of the Hierarchy.10 Now this externalisation of the Hierarchy shall culminate in or go along with the reappearance of the Christ or Maitreya.11, 12 This term 'Christ' can in general be understood in three different ways. In the first sense, in random order, can 'Christ' be understood as the name of an office that is held within the Hierarchy.13, 14 In the second, and most familiar, sense 'Christ' refers to the person Jesus of Nazareth.15 And in the third sense 'Christ' refers to the love-wisdom aspect of the soul in man.16 Now it is this last mentioned aspect which may be born in humanity as a whole in the coming new age.17, 18 So the birth of the Christ principle in humanity shall in the new age be accompanied by the reappearance of the Christ as World Teacher and is symbolised by the birth of Jesus of Nazareth.
Now it is well known that Jesus is born from the virgin or mother Mary.19 And Mary counts as the symbol of the Mother of the World. Before Jesus is born Mary carries him in her body and nurtures him. And this latter she also does right after his birth. And this is why the coming new age is also called 'the age of the Mother of the World'. The Christ principle has not yet been born in humanity,20 however in embryo it is present and growing in the matter aspect of humanity. In the new age we may expect the Christ principle to ripen in the womb of the Mother of the World after which the latter will bear and continue to nurture the former.21, 22 It is thus why in the Agni Yoga teachings of Helena Roerich, part of the ageless wisdom, much mention is made of the Mother of the World, especially in relation to Maitreya (the Christ) and the new age.23
