Een dieet kan begrepen worden als een manier van voeden.1 Spirituele zoekers zijn vaak nogal begaan met hun dieet, dus zullen hier enkele van de gedachten uit de tijdloze wijsheid over dit onderwerp verkend worden. De occulte methode volgend zullen we starten met de algemene ideeën en van daaruit werken naar de concrete.2

Het moet eerst begrepen worden dat alle manieren van voeden plaatsvinden middels de opname van substanties. Zulke substanties zijn noodzakelijk om zekere coherente en georganiseerde vormen van substanties in stand te houden, en de substanties voor opname kunnen genomen worden van zowel vormeloze als gevormde substanties.3 Assimilatie van pranische substanties door mensen kan bijvoorbeeld plaatsvinden via opname van de eerder vormloze pranische uitstralingen van de zon en via opname van het prana van lagere levensvormen, zoals planten en dieren,4 dit laatste plaatsvindend onder de wet van opoffering.5

Boven werden mensen, dieren en planten genoemd, welke drie van de vijf rijken van de natuur zijn. Het mineralenrijk en het rijk van zielen completeren de vijf.6 Zoals de situatie nu is voedt de mensheid zich middels opname van substanties uit alle drie de lagere rijken; de mineralen, de planten en de dieren. In de aloude historie van onze planetaire logos echter, in de tweede ronde,7 ligt een geheim verborgen dat verbonden is met de deva-bouwers van het plantenrijk en dat de wet uitvaardigt dat mensen zich enkel met planten zouden moeten voeden, en niet met dieren en mineralen.8, 9, 10

Sinds die aloude tijden is er echter veel gebeurd, en één van de gebeurtenissen die van belang is om hier te noemen vond plaats tijdens de initiële fasen van het mensenrijk in onze huidige vierde ronde. In die tijden, toen het mensenrijk zogezegd zich losmaakte van het dierenrijk als het derde menselijke wortelras,11, 12 was het dierenrijk nog steeds veel potenter dan het mensenrijk. En ook bestaande uit carnivoren joeg het dierenrijk heel lang op het mensenrijk, een enorme slachting onder mensen veroorzakend.13 Dit creëerde een karmische schuld voor het dierenrijk naar het mensenrijk, en de slacht en het eten van dieren door mensen vindt dus plaats onder de wet van karma.14 Een equilibrium wordt echter bereikt en het in incarnatie komen van zielen die een ander type van karmische relatie hebben met dieren zal ertoe bijdragen dat vegetarisme de norm wordt in het nieuwe tijdperk.15, 16, 17

Dat nu het eten van dieren door mensen op het moment nog steeds plaats vindt onder de wet van karma betekent niet dat dit voor ieder individu is voorgeschreven. Voorgeschreven diëten kunnen per individu verschillen.18, 19 Het kan afhangen van de kwaliteiten van hun lichamen en van hun culturele setting, maar ook afhangen van hun evolutiestadium.20 Want waar het eten van vlees deel uit kan maken van het dieet van gemiddelde mensen en zelfs aspiranten in zijn algemeenheid zou daar van afgezien moeten worden door hen in training voor inwijding, door discipelen en door ingewijden.21, 22 Degene op het pad wil altijd de vibratie en verfijning van zijn lichamen vergroten om ze af te stemmen op het licht van de ziel,23 en het eten van vlees verhindert zulk een vergroting.24, 25 Vooral zij die in training zijn voor inwijding zouden moeten afzien van het eten van vlees om schade te voorkomen van krachtige instromende energieën van hoge vibratie tijdens de inwijding.26

Met betrekking tot het eten van vlees zijn er verschillende klassen. Vlees van zoogdieren bijvoorbeeld wordt beschouwd als schadelijker dan gevogelte, terwijl vis als zelfs nog onschadelijker wordt beschouwd.27 Gerookt vlees is ook neutraler dan bloederig vlees.28 Bloederig vlees brengt niet alleen dierlijke emoties over aan menselijke eters,29 maar trekt ook onwenselijke gasten aan uit de subtiele werelden.30 Behalve het eten van vlees wordt op het spirituele pad het gebruik van tabak, alcohol en narcotica ook afgeraden, tenzij voor medische doeleinden.31, 32, 33 Eieren en kaas worden niet aangeraden voor hen die psychische vermogens willen ontwikkelen.34 Geitenkaas wordt beschouwd als beter dan koeienkaas. Deze bevat minder vet, en veel vet wordt ook afgeraden.35, 36 Dit geldt ook voor veel suiker omdat dit veel gisting veroorzaakt.37 Koffie en thee worden ook niet als behulpzaam beschouwd.38 Boter en melk maken geen deel uit van het ideale spirituele dieet, maar ze worden niet afgeraden.39 Melk wordt zelfs vaak voorgeschreven als gunstig.40 In principe kan gezegd worden dat voor spirituele zoekers voedsel met de kwaliteiten van tamas (inertie) en rajas (activiteit) worden afgeraden.41, 42 Tamasisch voedsel omvat bedorven eten en rajasisch voedsel omvat te pittig eten.43, 44

Geadviseerd dan wordt voedsel met de kwaliteit van sattva (ritme).45 Zulk voedsel omvat verse en vitaliserende fruit en groenten, volkoren granen en rijst, en noten.46, 47 Sinasappels worden in het bijzonder voorgeschreven. Dit geldt ook voor groenten die de zon contacteren, hoewel bijvoorbeeld aardappelen ook worden genoemd onder het geschikte voedsel. Hoewel niet deel uitmakend van het plantenrijk en dus niet ingesloten in het strikte ideaal worden melk en honing ook als geschikt genoemd.48, 49

Behalve juiste kwaliteit wordt ook juiste kwantiteit van belang geacht in een yogisch dieet.50 Het wordt geadviseerd om niet teveel en niet te zwaar te eten.51 Het menselijk mechanisme heeft slechts een klein beetje voedsel nodig en mensen worden in zijn algemeenheid geacht tegenwoordig vier keer meer te eten dan nodig.52, 53

Bovenstaande adviezen volgend wordt geïndiceerd dat na het volgen van een vleesdieet het lichaam drie jaren nodig zal hebben om zich aan te passen aan het nieuwe vegetarische dieet.54 Zeven jaren zouden voorbehouden moeten worden voor het voltooien van de algemene verfijning van het lichaam.55 En tien jaren van een strikt vegetarisch dieet zijn nodig om in staat te zijn als een psychist te werken met de opteken-aspecten van het astrale licht, ook 'de akasische optekeningen' genoemd.56 In het ruimere perspectief is het verfijnen van het fysieke lichaam een werk dat incarnatie na incarnatie door gaat,57 totdat bij het bereiken van Meesterschap het fysieke lichaam volledig vergeestelijkt is met zijn wederopstanding en hemelvaart.58, 59, 60

Dat dieetvoorschriften als boven worden gegeven aan hen op het spirituele pad betekent niet dat de zoeker daarop nadruk moet leggen. Het fysieke lichaam zou nooit de primaire focus van aandacht moeten worden.61 Het wordt voorgeschreven om te werken van binnen naar buiten, wat de gedachte omvat dat wanneer het denken en de emoties juist gedisciplineerd worden de juiste handelingen op het fysieke gebied zullen volgen.62, 63 Fanatisme en superioriteitscomplexen over diëten hinderen een spirituele zoeker veel meer in bereiking dan een onpassend dieet.64, 65 Enig fanatisme en teveel nadruk op dieet zal aanwezig zijn wanneer de eerste inwijding wordt genaderd, echter daarna zou de dieetdiscipline automatisch moeten worden.66

Moge aldus het juiste dieet een automatisch deel van onze discipline worden.
